EYE INJURIES
Background
Eye injuries can cause great distress. The range of eye injuries can vary from minor issues like sand or dust in the eye to more devastating embedded foreign objects, impact damage and burns. A great deal of reassurance is required with eye injuries.
Recognition
Any One of the any or more of the following events:
- History of impact with the eye
- A scratch to the eye eye injury pic
- Foreign particles or objects entering the eye
- Chemical splash in the eye
- Pain & shock
- Blurry or no vision from the injured eye
Management
- Foreign particles (sand or dirt etc.) irrigate the eye with water or saline.
- Chemical in the eye – irrigate the eye immediately with plenty of water or saline for 30minutes or more
- Keep the injured eye facing down to avoid cross contamination
- Small Embedded object in the eye – If the casualty closes the eye, very gently cover both eyes
- Large embedded object Protruding from the eye – Do not remove the object – apply a donut bandage or cup over the injured eye and it may be advisable to cover the second eye to avoid movement of the injured eye.
