EAR INJURIES
Background
Ear injuries can be caused by impact to the ear, foreign materials entering the ear, sudden changes in air or water pressure and also by infection. This can lead to damage of the inner ear and cause pain and loss of balance.
Recognition
- History of Impact to the ear
- Exposed to sudden change in air or water pressure
- History of ear infection’ ear injury oic
- Pain in the ear
- Loss of balance or dizziness
- Blood coming from the ear
Management
- If bleeding is present, do not plug the ear, but allow blood to drain into a lightly applied dressing
- Rest casualty in a comfortable position
- Reassure and seek immediate medical advice
- If fluid or blood drains from one or both ears after head trauma, emergency attention is required Call 000
