LESSON 1 – WHAT IS AN ALLERGY AND WHAT IS ANAPHYLAXIS
SERIOUS RISK FACTORS
A number of factors may lead to higher risk of death in Anaphylaxis. These include:
- A delay in administering adrenaline.
- No adrenaline administered
- Staying upright or walking during anaphylaxis.
- Having Asthma and Anaphylaxis, especially if the Asthma is poorly controlled. Most deaths from reactions to food occur in those with asthma.
Other risk factors identified statistically include:
- Eating away from home – Teenagers and Young adults represent the highest deaths from food anaphylaxis when they are eating away from home.
- Peanuts, tree nuts and seafood – These 3 foods cause the most deaths from food-induced anaphylaxis.
Insect Stings – Most fatal insect sting reactions occur in older individuals with heart disease
